A more intuitive approach to one of skincare's most essential steps.

Nature rarely relies on one solution when two can work together. Oil and water, for example, each have their own properties and their own place in the natural world. Skin can benefit from the same kind of thinking, which is the idea behind double cleansing: one formula loosens what has accumulated on the surface, the next finishes the cleanse.

Why Double Cleanse?

By the end of the day, your skin has been through a lot—sunscreen, makeup, excess oil, environmental residue and whatever else the day leaves behind. A single cleanse can remove much of it, but double cleansing takes a more nuanced approach. First, an oil-based cleanser dissolves oil-soluble buildup; then a water-based cleanser lifts away what remains, leaving skin clean without that overly stripped feeling.

Step One: Start with Oil

Choose from our five oil-based cleansers, each formulated for a different skin story. Aromatic Cleansing Nectar is the deeply nourishing choice for very dry skin, while Repair Cleansing Treatment combines omega 7s and provitamin A carotenoids in our signature retinol alternative cleanser. Cleansing Elixir is our detoxifying choice for combination or simply confused skin, while Cleansing Balm is designed for congested skin, cleansing and nourishing for a fresh, luminous finish. Radiant Cleansing Oil, made with berry and fruit seed oils, is our most gentle formula and a natural choice for sensitive or reactive skin.

Most oil-based cleansers can be massaged directly onto dry skin, allowing the botanical oils to loosen makeup, sunscreen and daily buildup. Radiant Cleansing Oil and Repair Cleansing Treatment can also be combined with water first, creating a light emulsion for a more hydrating cleanse. Aromatic Cleansing Nectar, Cleansing Balm, and Cleansing Elixir are removed with a soft, damp cloth, while Radiant Cleansing Oil and Repair Cleansing Treatment can be rinsed clean with water.

Step Two: Add Water

Follow with Radiant Hydrating Cleansing Essence, our water-based second cleanse. Massage it over damp skin to lift away remaining water-soluble residue, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Skin is left feeling fresh, hydrated and comfortable—clean, but never over-cleansed.

Why Oil First?

There is a reason oil makes such a natural first step. Oil has an affinity for oil-soluble substances, helping loosen the things you want to remove without relying on aggressive friction. It is a simple principle found throughout nature: work with the properties of what you're trying to move, rather than forcing the process.

The Natural Approach

Double cleansing isn't necessarily about adding another step to your routine. It's about giving each formula a specific job and understanding that different things call for different solutions. Nature is the original designer; sometimes, the most effective skincare ideas are the ones that have been there all along.
